19 März Music (and HEROES)[I added a new list to the right entitled HEROES. When you're in the mood, take a look. It is so easy for everyone to forget.]
Music - thought I would add something different today - a capella. Sharon and I went to a show several weeks ago: The Persuasions and Rockapella. It was truly outstanding. Many, many people do not know that a capella is huge. One of the neatest parts of some of the current a capella (last 20 years or so) is mouth percussion. The group sounds like it has percussion accompaniament but that is a human being making the sounds of snare drums, cymbals, brushing, etc. I am fascinated by mouth percussion because I wasn't aware of its existence as such. People are always commenting to me about my mouth making noises - not what you may think. LOL Jeff Thacher is not only an outstanding mouth percussionist but quite a singer as well. What stands out is that I love the bass line so much and I love percussion.
Barbershop music is a capella. Listening to some of the music lately brings back great memories from the 70s and early 80s when I belonged to a barbershop chapter and sang with two different quartets. Interestingly enough, I sang tenor in high school and ended up a bass (deep bass) later in life. George Baldi of Rockapella is one of the nicest, purest basses I have heard (I realize there are thousands around the world). I was involved in a few musicals back in the 70s also and one, A Funny Think Happended on the Way to the Forum, required me to have quite a significant range. My wife laughed so hard, so she said, when I hit one of the highest notes I have hit while singing a song as Miles Gloriosus. I was wearing tights (stop the laughing now) and helmet with a plume on top (that's quite enough). Yes, there was other clothing on me also. I was a handsome soldier. Just ask me. From what Sharon said, the plume wouldn't stop shaking back and forth and it looked like it was going to fly away. Maybe you had to be there.
Do you remember Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge? Johnny sang originally with The Crests (Sixteen Candles) then went to the Del-Satins (Teardrops Follow Me). Just wanted you to think about some Bee Bop (a capella). Stop and think about how far a capella dates back in time. Quite a few hundred years.
Listen in every now and then and I will share some a capella. Careful, I am getting back into Peter, Paul and Mary. I learned to play the guitar to Peter, Paul and Mary and The Kingston Trio.
What is life without music? |
